Even Floridians Depend on Radiant Heating

Many people move to Florida for its warm, sunny days, but surprisingly the “sunshine state” does not always provide perfect weather during Florida’s winter months. From December to March, when a cold front sweeps in bringing chilly weather, even Floridians look for a way to create a toasty, warm home. Radiant heating, which uses minimal electricity, provides increased energy efficiency and requires almost no maintenance, is the perfect solution for these cooler months.

This was the answer John Humphrey, who heads the custom home building company Dream Homes based out of North Florida, was looking for to meet his clients’ heating needs.  Humphrey always disliked the “blow dryer” effect of forced hot air with traditional heating systems as well as its uneven distribution of heat in two-story homes. The circulation of dry hot air is not only inefficient, but also disperses unhealthy allergens and dust. He was looking for a better heating method.

In researching an alternative system, Humphrey considered both hydronic and electric radiant heating. Hydronic radiant heating involves long-term maintenance and is a more complex and costlier system compared to electric radiant heating. Electric radiant heating is not only more cost effective and maintenance-free, but also a greener alternative. Humphrey turned to Orbit Radiant Heating for its energy-efficient electrical radiant heating system that conserves energy and reduces the system’s carbon footprint, which is the amount of greenhouse gasses produced by human activities.

“We’re planning to use this home as a model for energy efficiency and sustainable building means. Orbit’s system is one of the many eco-friendly systems we’re employing,” said Humphrey.

“And, with an electric radiant heating system, we easily installed the product ourselves and simply had a certified electrical contractor hook up the system to the sensor. We were also able to zone the system to meet the customer’s specific heating needs.  The lack of maintenance and faster heating response of these high quality heating cables are what sold us on Orbit Radiant Heating,” Humphrey continued.

The heating cables are the main source of heat on the first and second floors of the home with zones for each bedroom, bath and larger common areas, covering an area of approximately 2,500 sq. ft. on the first floor and 2,080 sq. ft. on the second floor.

“Orbit was very helpful throughout the whole installation process; they even helped me in deciding what products I needed and the best way to install them.  My experience with Orbit Radiant Heating has been superior and I would certainly recommend using them in further homebuilding projects,” said Humphrey.

Orbit Radiant Heating is a distributor of Nexans’ heating cables, the largest electric cable manufacturer in the world.
